The beloved award-winning book is coming to life on stage for Charlotte families this spring. Children’s Theatre of Charlotte will present Esperanza Rising, a powerful and inspiring story about resilience, family, and finding hope in difficult times.
Based on the bestselling novel by Pam Muñoz Ryan, the production was adapted for the stage by Alvaro Saar Rios with original music and songs by Dinorah Márquez. The show premiered in 2025 and now arrives in Charlotte with a talented cast of local Latine performers.
A Story of Courage and New Beginnings
Esperanza Rising follows Esperanza, a young girl whose life changes suddenly after tragedy strikes her family in Mexico. Forced to leave behind their home and comfortable life, Esperanza and her mother journey to California during the Great Depression to start over.
Through the challenges of adapting to a new country and a very different way of life, Esperanza discovers strength, compassion, and hope. The story is brought to life on stage through storytellers, music, and a vibrant ensemble cast.
Director Alicia Tafoya says the production is especially meaningful because of the opportunity to highlight Latine stories and artists on stage.
The show stars Lucca Amortegui as Esperanza, a 16-year-old student from Northwest School of the Arts who is making her Mainstage debut at Children’s Theatre of Charlotte.

The creative team hopes families walk away from the performance inspired by the story’s message of perseverance and the importance of listening to young people.
