UNION COUNTY CELEBRATIONS

This is Union County's biggest hometown Fourth of July party, and it does not disappoint. Main Street shuts down at 5 p.m. and fills up with food trucks, bounce houses, a vendor market, and live music starting at 6:30 p.m. - with fireworks launching once the sun goes down around 9:30 p.m. It's the kind of night where you spread a blanket on the sidewalk and let the kids run. Parking fills up quickly in downtown Monroe, so arrive early or plan to walk a few blocks. ⚠️ No personal fireworks permitted. Be aware that streets close at 5 p.m.
Waxhaw Independence Day Parade📍 Downtown Waxhaw - runs along South Main and North Main Streets 📅 Saturday, July 4 | 10 a.m. Free
Waxhaw's hometown parade is the real deal - floats, community groups, bands, horses, and loads of red, white, and blue spirit winding through one of the most charming downtowns in the region. This is the kind of old-fashioned parade your kids will remember, and it's completely free to attend. Free shuttles run every 30 minutes from several pickup locations, including Waxhaw Elementary School, MillBridge Clubhouse, Lawson Clubhouse, and the State Employees Credit Union. Grab a spot on the curb early! ⚠️ No parking along the parade route, including gravel spaces on W. North Main Street. Use the shuttle pickup locations.

Indian Trail's annual July 4th parade rolls right through the heart of town with floats, walkers, community groups, and plenty of flag-waving fun. It's a great quick-start to the holiday morning before heading to another event later in the day. The parade route is easy to line up along, and there's typically a fun, festive crowd. ⚠️ Expect road closures along the parade route. Arrive early for a good spot.
Unionville Fourth of July Celebration📍 Unionville Elementary School, 4511 Unionville Road, Monroe, NC 📅 Saturday, July 4 | Festivities begin at 9 a.m., Parade at 1 p.m. Free; car show entry $20
This is one of the most beloved community celebrations in all of Union County - a full day of small-town Americana hosted by the Unionville Lions Club, who have been doing this for over six decades. The morning kicks off with a classic car and antique tractor show starting at 8 a.m. (free to watch, $20 to enter a vehicle), followed by live musical acts throughout the day and a community parade at 1 p.m. There's food, rides, slides, and games, and the whole thing has the feel of the Fourth of July the way it used to be. CHARLOTTE & GREATER AREA CELEBRATIONS

This is the one. Charlotte's Stars & Stripes Spectacular will celebrate America's 250th anniversary with the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra, led by Music Director Kwamé Ryan, performing a patriotic program featuring works by John Williams, Gershwin, Dvořák, and others - including "America the Beautiful" and "Lift Every Voice and Sing." The concert will be followed by the WBT SkyShow, billed as the largest fireworks show in the Southeast. If you want a seat inside Truist Field to experience the symphony up close, tickets start at $25. But here's the mom hack: you can watch the entire fireworks show for free from nearby Romare Bearden Park. Parking in Uptown is limited and expensive - consider the light rail or a rideshare. ⚠️ No outside food or drinks inside Truist Field. Coolers not permitted inside the stadium. Free viewing outside at Romare Bearden Park - bring a blanket and arrive by 8 p.m. to get a good spot.

If your family is already Carowinds regulars, this is a no-brainer - pair a full day of rides and waterpark fun with a patriotic fireworks spectacular at night. The fireworks are visible throughout the park, but the best viewing locations are in the Carolina Boardwalk, County Fair, and Celebration Plaza areas. The Thrill Zone area and its surrounding rides will close early on event dates so the area can be safely prepared for the fireworks. This is also one of the few ways to catch fireworks on BOTH July 3 and July 4 if your crew just can't get enough. ⚠️ Carowinds is completely cashless - bring a card. No outside food or coolers permitted. Expect large crowds; arrive well before the fireworks if you want prime viewing spots. Plan your exit in advance - traffic on Carowinds Boulevard backs up significantly after the show.
Matthews Independence Day Celebration📍 Stumptown Park, 120 S. Trade Street, Matthews, NC 28105 📅 Saturday, July 4 | 5-9 p.m. (fireworks from Matthews SportsPlex, 2425 Sports Pkwy) Free
Matthews does Independence Day right with a two-location celebration. The party starts at Stumptown Park with food trucks, kids' activities, games, and live entertainment. A performance by 20Ride, a Zac Brown tribute band, runs from 6 to 9 p.m. Then fireworks launch from the nearby Matthews SportsPlex at dark. It's a well-organized event in a great family-friendly setting, and being close to Union County makes it super easy for our area families to get to without a long drive. ⚠️ No alcohol. The fireworks are launched from the SportsPlex- you can view them from Stumptown Park or near the SportsPlex on Brigman Road.
U.S. National Whitewater Center Fourth of July Celebration📍 5000 Whitewater Center Pkwy, Charlotte, NC 📅 July 3 & 4 | Activities start late morning; live music from 6:30 p.m. Parking $12; activity day passes are additional
The Whitewater Center is the active family's July 4th dream. The multi-day festival includes the Tread, White & Blue 5K on the morning of July 4, live roots and rock music throughout the day, and "River Jam" sessions on the water. There are no fireworks here, but the vibe is festive and the scenery along the Catawba River is gorgeous. If your family likes kayaking, zip-lining, or just wants somewhere to spread out, eat great food, and enjoy live music without the crowd stress of a fireworks show, this is your spot. ⚠️ Parking is $12. Activity passes for whitewater, zip lines, etc. are sold separately. Outside food and coolers have varying restrictions - check the Whitewater Center website before you go.
Harvey B. Gantt Center - Charlotte Museum of History Naturalization Ceremony📍 Charlotte Museum of History, 3500 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC 📅 Saturday, July 4 | 11 a.m.–1 p.m. Free
This one is a little different - and genuinely moving for families. The Charlotte Museum of History hosts a naturalization ceremony on July 4, where new citizens take their oath of citizenship, set to the backdrop of patriotic music and family-friendly festivities. If you want to give your kids a July 4th experience that goes deeper than fireworks and food trucks - one that reminds everyone what citizenship actually means - this is worth the trip. ⚠️ This is a ceremony-focused event, not a festival. 💡 A Few Tips for Surviving the Fourth With Kids
Go early. Every event on this list gets crowded, especially after dark. Give yourself more time than you think you need, particularly for parking.
Bring ear protection for little ones. Fireworks are LOUD, especially up close. A cheap pair of kid-sized ear muffs or foam earplugs can be a total game-changer for sensitive kids - and it means you don't have to leave at 9:01 p.m.
